Individual/Group

Qiaopihua

Qiaopihua is an indie rock outfit based in Hangzhou, China, consisting of Lin(Dr.), Luo (Gt./Vo.) and Lu (cor.). By adding instruments such as French horn and piano, Qiaopihua intends to shape unconventional midwest emo sound. This clip was taken from their debut gig at Mao Livehouse, with three guest players, Xie, Ying, and Ni respectively on keyboards, bass guitar, and electric guitar.

Qiaopihua is currently working on their debut EP. Being inspired by American Football, Cap’n Jazz, Marietta, and other emo legends, this three-piece endeavors to seek new possibilities in China’s underground music scene.

people underline

people underline is an experimental ambient duo travelling around Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai. With their roadless instrumental improvisations and tell-all rap music, they show the complexity of contemporary human beings – sometimes describing unspeakable emotions with pure notes, sometimes naming the ‘big questions’ with long words. Classical or modern, digital or analogue… people underline tries to bring out combinations that will make you wonder.

In short, it’s a duo that can pick up MPCs and microphones and spitting bars, but also an improvisation group that can pick up horns and guitars and make ambient noise. people underline is like two kids living next door to each other in a neighbourhood underground garage, making noises that the tenants hate.

Cream Heaven [已停止/Terminated]
Cream Heaven

Cream Heaven is a Hangzhou-based 'band' made up of five middle-school music nerds.

Convinced that music can convey both power and complaint, Sun and Luo decided on their last Children's Day celebration to form a band that would break up after graduation, thus leaving a mark on their lives of obscurity.

After a handful of rehearsals, they recorded some music, which was played by three people - Kong on guitar, Chen on drums and Luo on miscellaneous duties - relying on a smartphone from several years ago, paired with a Lenovo UC30 Home Karaoke Entertainment System and a condenser microphone that was purchased at the Yiwu Commodity Market for 100 Yuan.

Even though they only released several songs, there are two people responsible for writing the lyrics, one is the handyman and the other is 'Xingkong@BangBangTang' (he wrote Locked Illness, though I don't know why he won't reveal his real name)".

The quality of these songs is so low that they don't deserve to be labelled as underground, experimental, or indie rock, and there are a lot of playing mistakes, singing errors, broken notes, and rhythmic instability. In short, they are the culmination of all the band's problems. A song usually has five or fewer chords (it's shocking that you'll be hearing songs like City in 2021, right?), although this is an irresponsible way to approach a song. They call it 'minimalism', even though it's an irresponsible attitude towards the songs and an attempt to show off, and they use the fact that they don't have the money to go to the studio as an excuse to avoid questioning them.

City Lyrics/Composition: Luo

The city is bustling in the morning, the streets are lined with cops and brother n’ sisters.

I can’t see the blue sky or the birds, and my heart is shaking in this cradle.

Gals and lads in groups, spoken words, cleaners and broken earth.

You stand there and don’t look back, or are you hiding too many secrets?

You’re changing every day. It boggles my mind.

Let me feel everything here. The smell of wildflowers and sewage.

Everyone I know has disappeared. I’ve found a key.

Let me follow your shadow and dream of those days.

The city is beautiful The city is dirty

Cities die in rotting thoughts

We fly in a transparent sky

Let me dream my dreams again

Let me see your smile again

There are 10,000 people who live in my heart

Their favourite thing is to flinch and goad.

There’s a long line of cars on the bridge.

The night sky where you can’t see the stars

The lights on the ground are brighter than the moonlight

Whose dreams do we lie in and fantasise?

We dream of living and dying, and ask our mother why we’re buried in the ground when we can’t wake up.

Have you left me where I am? Are you hiding too many secrets?

Apparently DeepL saved my life one more time and made loads of mistakes that are left to be corrected by the reader. 😀

Live at Free Fest., July 2022.

Soulooper
Soulooper is my solo project starting in 2020. I seek to use instrumental hip-hop as a base and explore the possibilities of hip-hop music intersecting with other themes on this framework. For example, my early 2022 work New Standard Junior High School Required Reading Books uses China's required junior high school reading books as the title of each song and resists the authority of the education system in its rhythms through sampling and other means. The New Curriculum Standard Junior High School Required Reading Books (NCSJHSRRB) is released by Happy Records, and a portion of the profits (approximately 800 RMB) are donated to Project Hope.
In the same year, I released You Don't Need to Hear It.It's a mini-album featuring traditional Chinese instruments built on post-rock/electronic/ambient. I explored a non-traditional and at the same time quite feasible way of preserving the ethnical character through the fusion of traditional instruments and modern sounds.
