The Sandwich

I accidentally ate something else while eating that sandwich.

It was a typical factory-prepared sandwich: three slices of bread with an unearthly pallor, and a crumpled plastic wrapper held together by a piece of clear tape with ‘tear here’ printed on it. After opening the package – fortunately, I was guided by the tape to the right place, and every time I ate the triangles I couldn’t eat the seaweed – the dampness hit me before the meat floss and cheese that had been generated on the package, a mixture of meat floss and salsa together with the cheese – the shelf-life of which had long since been melted into a sauce – and the cheese – the shelf-life of which had been reduced by a few days – was a little too long. The mixture of meat loaf and salsa and the cheese – with a shelf life of 90 days, months before it was pulled from the shelves – was wrapped around two of the three slices of bread.

Swirling around, the bread edges are always the first to be eaten. These unadorned edges will be the first to suck the saliva out of your mouth, leaving the overconfident, unprepared you in a hurry. But the enjoyment that follows is definitely worth the sacrifice. With each subsequent bite, the meat floss, salsa, cheese and the bread soaked with them will parade around your tongue, and finally, with great reluctance, your saliva will be swept up into your oesophagus.

Do you remember? We used to be so happy when we ate bread like this. But those tears over the cake that disfigured me in the back seat of the car during the bumpy ride don’t matter now, I accidentally ate something else while eating that sandwich.
